Do toenail braces work?

Ingrown toenails are often caused by genetic predispositions. However, ingrown toenails may also develop when the toenail is not trimmed correctly or when you wear inappropriate shoes. Ingrown nails are very painful and may get infected.

To avoid unpleasant surgical interventions, medical pedicures and podiatrists offer many treatments for deformed or ingrown toenails.

Corrective nail braces are medical devices, which use tension to exert a change in tissues. Within a certain time after the application of a nail brace, the treated nail is often completely straightened.

There is a wide variance in the severity of ingrown nails.

There are various types of Orthonyxic braces:

  • The BS Spangen brace is a flat plastic leaf spring with which fast and effective nail correction is possible, e.g. ingrown nails with wounds in the nail fold, sensitive side edges of the nails and purulent ingrown nails. Fixed over the whole nail surface, the necessary traction is perfectly distributed.
  • The Luga Clip System is a thin, flexible, plastic plate that is glued to the nail plate. The side of the nail (lateral or medial) that is most heavily ingrown is taken into account.
  • The Onyclip Spange. In the Onyclip Spange a steel wire is added to reinforce the plastic strip, and its fitting and effect is the same as that of the BS Spange.
  • The Gorkiewicz Spange. It's a surgical steel wire that fits over the nail and gradually and painlessly lifts the curved nail into correct alignment.
  • The Ross Fraser Nail brace corrects painful ingrown toenails. It's a stainless steel wire that fits over the nail.
  • The Naspan-Platinum. The brace from Gerlach Technik basically regulates itself and adjusts to the nail. Applying the brace is easy and painless, even in problematic areas. The brace is made out of a single piece which is shaped as a sinus curve, resulting in a unique reset and lever effect.
  • Composite brace system. It's a revolutionary nail correction system, which helps ingrown or involuted toenails grow back to their natural shape without the need for surgery or any pain. In this system we use a hardened composite material which is cured by an LED light and acts like a brace on the nail plate. This ensures that the nail remains in the correct shape as it grows from the base of the nail until the end, thus reshaping the pathway for the new nail growth.

The correction requires the brace be regularly adjusted, and thus the patient needs to return. The whole treatment process takes about 1 year since it requires an entire nail to pass an entire growth cycle, root to top.

Nail repair

Nail repair or correction is a technique in which the natural nail is partially replaced by an artificial nail. This nail repair technique can be manufactured through gel, acrylic or acrygel. The nail feels very natural and can be painted.

Application of nail repair:

  • replacement of missing nail
  • correction of a deformed nail
  • ingrown nail
  • strengthening natural nail
  • accompanying the growth of the nail
  • mycosis (fungus) nail
